Science Centre Singapore and KidsSTOP: Building Scientific Curiosity Through Play-Based Learning
In

A Legacy of Interactive Science Education

Since its establishment, Science Centre Singapore has stood as the nation’s premier institution for hands-on scientific exploration, and its dedicated children’s wing, KidsSTOP, has become a cornerstone of early childhood STEM education. Officially opened on 5 June 2014, KidsSTOP occupies a 3,000-square-metre gallery specifically designed for children aged eight and below, providing a safe and conducive environment where young learners can inquire, investigate, and innovate through interactive play.

The centre’s philosophy rests on a simple yet powerful premise: children learn best when they are actively engaged. With more than 20 exhibits designed to introduce Discovery of the World, KidsSTOP aligns its programmes with Singapore’s Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) Framework, ensuring that every activity promotes holistic development.

Programmes That Transform Learning

KidsSTOP’s 2026 preschool programme catalogue reveals a sophisticated approach to educational programming. The Science Play workshop, designed for children aged three to four, combines a 45-minute guided workshop with 75 minutes of free play. Themes range from “A Fruitful Day,” which uses multisensory exploration to teach how fruits grow, to “Animal Kingdom Fun,” where children mimic animal movements and learn characteristics through storytelling and puppetry.

For older children aged five to six, programmes like Sky Explorer challenge participants to create aircraft using various materials, test their creations, and observe how well they fly—an exercise that introduces fundamental principles of aerodynamics through playful experimentation. My Digestive System takes a similarly hands-on approach, allowing children to hear their own heartbeat using a Doppler device while learning about human biology.

The Portable Planetarium programme offers a 60-minute virtual tour of the solar system, with stops at each planet to share fun facts. For a more focused astronomical experience, the “Phases of the Moon” session explains lunar cycles through interactive software demonstrations.

The Omni-Theatre Advantage

Science Centre Singapore’s Omni-Theatre complements the hands-on gallery experience with large-format immersive films. The seamless integration of gallery exploration and theatre presentations creates a comprehensive educational ecosystem that caters to diverse learning styles—from kinaesthetic learners who thrive on physical interaction to visual learners who benefit from cinematic presentations.

Planning Your Educational Visit

Science Centre Singapore operates from 10am to 5pm, with admission ending at 4:15pm. The centre’s location at 15 Science Centre Road makes it accessible for school groups and families alike. For educators planning field trips, the centre offers guided tours that combine admission with professional interpretation, ensuring that students extract maximum educational value from their visit.
